The number of Polish e-shops increased by 2,800 in the 1H19, to a new record high, mostly due to changes in how Poles shop, according to a study by Bisnode, as daily Rzeczpospolita reported on August 15

In the past 12 months, 5,000 new online shops have been established. The Polish e-market is worth about PLN50bn (€11.4bn) and has had a great development potential.

“That is a record number of registered shops. Today we can say that a real boom in online activity has been taking place,” said spokesman of Bisnode Tomasz Starzyk, as cited by Rzeczpospolita, adding that according to estimates at the end of June, the number of active stores amounted to 31,700, up by nearly 2,800.

According to Rzeczpospolita, around 60% of customers shop online, attracted by lower prices and a much wider choice of products and services.

The value of Poles' online spending will grow by 25% in 2019, reaching one of the highest levels in Europe, according to a study by Ecommerce Europe organization.

“Over the past decade, traditional stores have come under great pressure, exerted not only by e-commerce giants such as Amazon or Rakuten, but also by private equity and hedge funds, which are willing to take over companies in the hope of reselling them quickly or make profitable sale of their assets,” said EMEA East Technical Services Director at Commvault Przemyslaw Mazurkiewicz.

“All this means that traditional retailers, regardless of their size, have to focus on online activity and technology as key way to develop their market relations, enabling them to retain existing and acquire new customers,” he added. Since January 2020, retail sales tax will come to force and is likely to serve as an incentive for retailers to open e-stores.

Polish companies are doing well also on foreign markets. Just recently, the cosmetics companies such as Ziaja, Bielenda, Bell, Paese and Verona have successfully entered the Chinese market through e-commerce platforms AliExpress and Tmall. Thanks to these online platforms, the Polish cosmetics companies have managed to record a huge growth in sales in a very short period of time, added the head of the Polish Union of the Cosmetics Industry Blanka Chmurzynska-Brown.
