Croatian power company Hrvatska elektroprivreda (HEP) has installed five new electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at tourist hotspots in Dalmatia, the company said in a statement.

Central, Eastern and Southeast Europe have so far lagged behind Western Europe in EV charging infrastructure, which is among the factors holding back wider adoption of EVs in the region. However, numbers are gradually increasing.

HEP said the rollout of the new EV charging stations — in Drevnik, Jelsa, Makarska, Ploce and Stari Grad on the island of Hvar — would complement the existing ELEN network in cities and along motorways, “thus providing the conditions for further development of Croatian tourism, enabling more and more owners of electric cars from European countries to have comfortable and unobstructed entry to all tourist destinations in Croatia.”

Earlier this month, HEP deployed 16 EV chargers along motorways in Croatia, making it possible to travel from the country’s borders with Hungary and Slovenia to the Adriatic Sea, and connecting Croatia to the EV charger network within the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T).

The ELEN network currently comprises more than 80 chargers, and HEP plans to increase the total to over 100.
