Poland is one of the leading EU exporters of chocolate, Eurostat data showed on March 28.

EU countries exported 867,000 tonnes of chocolate and chocolate bars to countries outside the EU last year, a 2% increase compared to 2022.

The top three exporters of chocolate were Germany with exports totalling 221,000 tonnes or 26% of total EU exports, the Netherlands at 123,000 tonnes, which made up 14% of the total, and Poland, which exported 115,000 tonnes or 13% of the EU’s total chocolate exports.

The largest recipients of EU chocolate were the UK and the US, followed by Russia, Canada, and Australia. Chocolate imports to the EU came mainly from Switzerland.

The rise in Polish chocolate exports comes at a time when cocoa prices on the world market are skyrocketing.

In recent months, the price of cocoa has reached nearly $10,000 per tonne - the highest level in history - in the wake of poor weather conditions in West Africa, the world's leading cocoa-producing region.

The high cocoa prices have put a strain on chocolate manufacturers, who have been forced to raise prices to cover their costs. However, the strong demand for chocolate, particularly in the EU, has helped to offset the impact of the higher prices.
