The host nations for the Euro 2012 football championships are not oddson favourites to win the competition, though they should benefit economically - Poland more so than Ukraine.
The World and European champion Spain is favourite to win Euro 2012, followed by Germany, beaten World Cup finalists Holland and then England, which is yet again another a sign of the triumph of hope over experience. Poland and Ukraine are near the bottom of the pack at odds of 52-1 to win the tournament, well behind neighbour Russia.
In terms of economics, Erste Group says the host nations will benefit from the short-term boost from tourists, and the longer-term boost from the 30.2bn invested in infrastructure and stadia.
Over 1m tourists are expected to attend the matches, each staying for an average three-four nights and spending an average of 800, thus bringing in total at least 800m to both countries. Euro 2012 is also forecasted to contribute an additional 2 percentage points to Polish GDP growth between 2008-2020.
