Exiled Ukrainian ex-minister banks on video come-back

Oleksandr Klymenko, who served as Ukraine's tax minister under ousted ex-president Viktor Yanukovych and whose close ties to the Yanukovych family got him sanctioned by the EU, has launched a bizarre comeback bid with a series of videos depicting his struggles to get his case heard in Europe.

The latest, titled 'Revolving Doors', shows Klymenko, 34, and his lawyer passing through an endless succession of doors to EU institutions that always leave him back at the starting point.

But the cinematic 'door' motif also contains an ironic, if likely unintended, echo of Klymenko's You Tube film debut in 2014, when CCTV cameras captured his riotous departure from Ukraine immediately after mass protests in Kyiv toppled Yanukovych.

Klymenko and former prosecutor general Viktor Pshonka were filmed literally charging their way through border guards at Donetsk Airport to board a waiting jet to Russia, taking down the security gate in the process – effecting an exit through a door that is unlikely to revolve any time soon.

Klymenko has been living in exile in Moscow since he fled Ukraine. As well as having his assets in the European Union frozen in April 2014, he is also listed as wanted by the Ukrainian prosecutor general's office for creating tax evasion schemes. Klymenko rejects the charges as groundless.
